The Bakarwal dog, native to the Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir, is currently facing endangerment. This ancient breed, traditionally used by the Bakharwal and Gujjar tribes for guarding livestock, is experiencing a significant decline in population. Factors contributing to their endangered status include habitat loss, decreasing grazing lands, and lack of medical facilities in the region.
These dogs are known for their loyalty, bravery, and independence. They have a unique vegetarian diet and are primarily bred for guarding purposes. The breed has a slow reproduction rate, with small litter sizes of about two to three puppies per year, although there are cases of large size litter, but most of the puppies in a litter die due to unavailability of medical services, non-vaccination and lack of preservation knowledge which hampers their population growth.
Conservation efforts are being made to revive the breed, including local initiatives in the Kashmir region, your support to revive this breed is most important by joining any of the following affiliate programs.
